INTRODUCING A GLOBAL SCORE
TO HELP YOU CHOOSE MORE EASILY
To guide you in your choices, we have developed a global environmental impact score. This considers 14 factors of impact on our planet which are evaluated at every step of the product life cycle. Recognized by the scientific community, each of these factors make it possible for us to establish a clear profile for each of our products.
WHERE CAN YOU FIND
THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT SCORE?
It’s easy: the environmental impact score of each product is displayed on the website, on each product sheet, beneath the ingredient list. That is also where you can find more detailed information about each product, such as its manufacturing conditions, packaging, and social contribution.
To make the score even clearer, we have decided to highlight the carbon footprint and water footprint of each product. Why? Because those two data points represent two-thirds of the global environmental impact of each cosmetic product evaluated according to this index. Now you can get an idea of the product’s footprint, at a glance!
The carbon footprint of a product represents the quantity of greenhouse gas (CO2) emitted throughout the product’s life cycle – particularly during the production processes of the ingredients and packaging, its manufacturing process, transport, usage, and finally the recycling of its packaging.
What is a water footprint?
This evaluation represents the water consumed throughout the product’s life cycle. It takes into account the manufacturing of the ingredients and packaging, the water required to produce the product at the factory, the water consumed during usage (shower, etc.), and the water required to treat the resulting waste water.
HOW TO INTERPRET
THESE SCORES?
We’ve decided to make an intuitive score. Each product is rated from A to E, and each letter is associated with a color ranging from dark green for the most virtuous products to dark orange for those that leave room for improvement. The products are classified in comparison to other L’Oréal products of the same category. For example, each face cream is compared with more than 1,400 other face creams produced by L’Oréal. Creams ranked “A” have the most favorable profile, while those ranked “E” offer opportunities for us to further improve our practices.
PRODUCT
WITH AN A
This product is in the 10th percentile of the lowest environmental footprint in its category.
PRODUCT
WITH A B
This product has an environmental impact lower than the average in its category.
PRODUCT
WITH A C
The environmental profile of this product ranks in the average for its category.
PRODUCT
WITH A D
The environmental and social impact of this product is greater than that of the average product in its category. We are actively researching solutions to reduce its footprint.
PRODUCT
WITH AN E
This product is in the 10th percentile of the highest environmental and social footprint in its category. We are doing everything we can to lessen its impact.
THE IMPACT OF A PRODUCT
THROUGHOUT ITS LIFECYCLE
Let’s review the major impact factors that are authoritative for the scientific community
The impact on:
THE CLIMATE
AIR QUALITY
THE OZONE LAYER
The impact on:
THE QUANTITY, QUALITY
AND ACIDIFICATION OF THE WATER
The impact on:
NATURAL RESOURCES AND DIVERSITY
OUR COMMITMENTS
DURING THE PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE
INGREDIENTS AND
FORMULAS
The analysis of the life cycle takes into account the quantity of water used to grow the plants which provide the ingredients used in our products, as well as the preparation techniques of those ingredients.
PACKAGING MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS PRODUCTION
We also evaluate the impact of each production step of our product packaging, including transport.
THE MANUFACTURING, STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRODUCT.
We also bring special attention to the water and energy consumption of our factories and the impact of the transportation that carries the product to the end consumer.
CONSUMER USAGE
Even the consumer usage phase is taken into account. The data provided is based on an average estimation, but as a consumer you also have the power to reduce its impact by limiting your water consumption as you use the product.
PACKAGING RECYCLING
We are continuously innovating to design our packaging so that they can be recycled.
DID
YOU KNOW?
By 2030, 100% of the plastic used in our packaging will be either from recycled or biobased sources. So far, we have achieved 25%.
In 2020, La Roche-Posay was the first dermo-cosmetic brand to launch a tube containing cardboard, using 45% less plastic than an average plastic tube.
With our 400 ml Lipikar ecological refills, we are saving until 77% less plastic compared to an average plastic bottle.
